Johnny Cake Recipe (Caribbean Fried Bread) | Browny’s Cakes

A collage showing freshly fried Caribbean Johnny Cakes with a golden, crispy crust served beside slices of cheese, alongside close-up shots of oil heating in a pan and ingredients like flour and margarine prepared in glass bowls. The Browny’s Cakes logo is visible in the center.

Soft on the inside and golden and crispy on the outside, these Johnny Cakes are a true Caribbean classic!

They’re perfect for breakfast, lunch, or as a tasty snack filled with cheese, tuna salad, crab salad, or simply enjoyed on their own. 😋

🧂 Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose (patent) flour

  • 1 tablespoon baking powder

  • 2 tablespoons margarine (halvarine)

  • 2 tablespoons sugar

  • ½ cup milk

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • ½ cup water

🥣 You’ll Need

  • Frying pan (with oil)

  • Mixing bowl

  • Fork

  • Kitchen towel or paper towel

  • Measuring cup (cups)

  • Measuring spoons

👩🏽‍🍳 Instructions

1. Combine the dry ingredients
Sift together the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt in a large bowl.

2. Make the dough
Add the water, milk, and margarine. Knead everything together until a smooth, non-sticky dough forms.
👉 If the dough feels slightly sticky, add a bit more flour (about 2 tablespoons).

3. Let it rest
Dust a clean bowl lightly with flour and place the dough inside.
Cover it with a kitchen towel and let it rest for 25–30 minutes.

4. Shape the dough
After resting, heat the oil in your frying pan.
While the oil heats up, divide the dough into small balls (I usually make them about 100 g each, but you can choose your preferred size).

5. Fry the Johnny Cakes
Roll each dough ball out to about ½ cm thick and carefully place them in the hot oil.
Fry until both sides are golden brown.

6. Serve & enjoy
Remove the Johnny Cakes from the pan and drain on a paper towel.
Serve warm they taste amazing with cheese, tuna salad, crab salad, or just plain! 💛
